Spark Summit 2016 kicked off today in San Francisco, and early on, Microsoft dropped some big news, announcing it’s making a major commitment to the open source Apache Spark Big Data engine.

In a related blog post, Microsoft pledged an “extensive commitment for Spark to power Microsoft’s big data and analytics offerings including Cortana Intelligence Suite, Power BI, and Microsoft R Server,” by announcing:

  • Spark for Azure HDInsight General Availability (moving this out of preview)
  • R Server for HDInsight in the cloud powered by Spark (also moving this out of preview)
  • R Server for Hadoop on-premises now powered by Spark
  • Power BI support for Spark Streaming

Additionally, if you’re not at the show (which you’re not, because you’ve decided to spend your time on Aberdeen Essentials!), you can view a free live stream of the event, available Tuesday, June 7 and Wednesday, June 8 from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM PDT.
