Today, successful environment, health, and safety (EH&S) operations are based on gathering, managing and leveraging data. However, Best-in-Class firms face a problem: while historic data (which is a lagging indicator) identifies problem areas, it neither predicts future adverse incidents nor optimizes responses to prevent future incidents.

For leaders, this is the ultimate frustration. Best-in-Class companies are proactive and focus on avoidance, not managing things after the fact. What’s an EH&S manager to do?

Predictive EH&S to the Rescue

To address limits of lagging indicators, the Best-in-Class are increasingly deploying predictive analytics to leverage leading indicator data in order to predict when and where the next incident or adverse event is most likely to occur — and to prevent these from happening. Aberdeen finds that Best-in-Class firms are 89% more likely than All Others to implement predictive analytics.

Advanced (i.e., predictive) analytics, mobility, and IoT have moved to the forefront of technology priorities (Figure 1 below).

Both mobility and IoT provide abundant leading-indicator data to fuel predictive analytics platforms.

  • Mobile technology allows employees to stay in the field, speedily reporting EH&S observations and incidents, and is a major source of leading indicator data to predictive analytics platforms.
  • IoT provides new sensors, new connectivity, and access to real-time, streaming product, employee, environmental, and asset data.

Together, mobility and IoT feed leading-indicator data and observations to advanced predictive analytics platforms to enable the biggest shift in EH&S in decades: quantification of health and safety based on actual data to synthesize insights, enabling us to reliably predict future EH&S performance.

Leading Indicators and EH&S

Leading indicators and EH&S are industry’s new power couple. Predictive EH&S produces health, safety, and environmental insights based on real-time leading-indicator data. This goes far beyond traditional lagging-indicator data, fueling advanced analytic platforms to predict the occurrence of future incidents and to optimize responses to prevent such incidents.

Predictive analytics based on leading indicators has proven to be more effective than traditional lagging indicator trend analyses, and the approach is becoming a vital tool of EH&S programs.

Predictive analytics are the cutting edge in incident and accident prevention. Organizations must be proactive in their incident and accident prevention efforts, and the use of predictive analytics is the best tool for the job.
